For more than forty years, BDU pants have been a staple in American apparel. Developed by the US Army in the late 1970s, BDUs were intended to replace the uniform pants used in the Vietnam era. Today, agencies and civilians across the world wear BDUs for work and play.
The abbreviation “BDU” stands for “Battle Dress Uniform,” which was the official term that the US Military established when the pants came out in the 1980’s.
The three main reasons BDUs are so well-regarded are:
Whether you’re on the job or just need a pair of pants to go camping, BDUs offer a classic looking rugged and functional design that’s ready for anything. In addition to being composed of durable ripstop fabric, BDUs have large pockets, reinforced stress points, and adjustable waist lines. Also, some BDU variations now sell in a variety of colors, materials, non-military issue camouflage prints, and have adopted the use of the zipper fly (instead of a button fly). Altogether making these pants even more desirable to an even wider range of users around the world.
It may be challenging to determine which size BDU pants to get, especially when you need to ensure that they remain roomy enough for ease of movement. Additionally, choosing the correct length is its own issue, as they tend to come in short, regular, and tall, which is vague and not necessarily reflective of a clear sizing guide to base your decision on. As a general rule of thumb, aim to buy BDU pants with pant legs that fall between the start of the ankle and the floor. This ensures a proper length when wearing boots and shoes. From there, deciding on the waist size can be a bit confusing due to the adjustable straps featured on the waistband of BDUs. A good rule to remember is to select the next size up if you are somewhere between two sizes or wanting a more “roomy fit”.
The Uniform BDU Trouser offers durability and the functional details you expect from a traditional BDU, but at an even more affordable price. Unlike the traditional BDU pant, the Uniform BDU features a few improvements. The button fly has been updated to a modern zipper fly, and the pants are offered in two modern fabric options.
