For more than forty years, BDU pants have been a staple in American apparel. Developed by the US Army in the late 1970s, BDUs were intended to replace the uniform pants used in the Vietnam era. Today, agencies and civilians across the world wear BDUs for work and play.

It may be challenging to determine which size BDU pants to get, especially when you need to ensure that they remain roomy enough for ease of movement. Additionally, choosing the correct length is its own issue, as they tend to come in short, regular, and tall, which is vague and not necessarily reflective of a clear sizing guide to base your decision on. As a general rule of thumb, aim to buy BDU pants with pant legs that fall between the start of the ankle and the floor. This ensures a proper length when wearing boots and shoes. From there, deciding on the waist size can be a bit confusing due to the adjustable straps featured on the waistband of BDUs. A good rule to remember is to select the next size up if you are somewhere between two sizes or wanting a more “roomy fit”.
