An old military favorite has evolved into practical wear for everyone. You’ll see BDUs on first responders, anyone who needs rugged clothes for work, and outdoors enthusiasts of all types.
Here's why they're so popular, and how to find the right BDU shirts, pants and jacket for yourself.
BDU background
BDU stands for “battle dress uniform,” but BDU-style clothes have expanded far from their military origins. First responders love them, and for good reason.
The battle dress uniform – originally consisting of BDU pants, coats, combat boots and Boonie hats – was standard military gear from the 1980s until the mid-2000s. Although they've been retired from every branch of the armed forces for official duty, military-spec BDUs shirts, pants, and jackets are extremely common for law enforcement in particular.
Why BDUs are popular ?
All BDU pieces have plenty of pockets. They're also very durable – felled seams mean those pockets won't rip. Bellowed pockets have drain holes for when you're wearing them outside in rough weather. The fused pocket flaps have a streamlined look for when you need to look professional. In general, BDUs combine high-functioning features with a streamlined, no-nonsense look.

How to find the right fit for BDUs
Propper has a size chart on each BDU apparel page to help you make sure you’re on target, but here’s a breakdown to help you think about finding the clothes to suit you best.
BDU Pants

- BDU pants have a distinct six-pocket configuration, with drawstring leg closures. These pants should sit comfortably at the natural waist, with adjustable waist tabs for a secure fit. They should also be roomy enough for movement, without being bulky. The legs should be long enough to tuck into boots if needed.
- Although BDUs tend to follow the same time-tested pattern, Propper has a BDU 2.0 Work Pant that riffs on the classic BDU style. It has a seven-pocket design, but is even more streamlined in appearance. The fabric is also lighter and dries faster than many fabrics.
- BDUs go by alpha sizing (S, M, L, etc.). To find your size, take your waist and inseam measurements to find which type fits you. And to ensure you have enough room in your seat and leg, you can also take measurements from your upper thigh as well as your hip at the bottom of your pants zipper.
BDU Coats and Shirts
- BDU jackets or coats have four front cargo pockets with hidden pocket flaps, and a covered button front for a crisp, military look. BDU Shirts have two front cargo pockets, shoulder epaulets, and are fade- and wrinkle-resistant. Like all BDU apparel, the shirts are made of rugged materials that are built to last.
- For both coats and shirts, you’ll find double-reinforced elbows and adjustable buttons at the sleeve cuffs at the wrists. Many coats and shirts also have a pen pocket, so they’re designed specifically for work.
- To find your fit: Measure your chest and height to find out which size BDU coat or shirt works best for you. Some coats’ measurements charts also ask for your waist measurements to help find your precise size.
